Excellence Award

Every year the Saudi Society for the Study of Liver Disease and Transplantation gives an excellence award to a deserving accomplished senior hepatologist or liver transplant surgeon honoring his outstanding contribution and distinguished work in the field of liver disease and transplantation.

We give this award of recognition to express our appreciation for his great support to SASLT for all his help in achieving our mission and vision and implementing policies, procedures and bylaws of the society as one of the Board of Directors or committee members,

SASLT would like to showcase their exemplary work in terms of research,  education and outstanding dedication to patients and the community.

SASLT Excellence Awardee 2016

Prof. Abdulrahman Aljumah

Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist

Prof. Abdulrahman A. Aljumah is currently the dean of the College of Medicine and a fulltime professor of medicine at Dar Al Uloom University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He was formerly a consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist at King Abdulaziz Medical City and a Professor of College of Medicine at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He graduated from Cairo University, Egypt and obtained his diploma in internal medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London, United Kingdom. This was followed by the Membership of The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCP), Dublin, Ireland and the Arab Board in Internal Medicine (ABIM). He completed his clinical fellowship training program in Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Liver Transplantation from the Toronto Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada and awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCP) Dublin, Ireland. He also obtained a master’s degree in public health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MPH) at the College of Public Health and Health Informatics, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK.

Prof. Aljumah  is a member of several scientific associations and a founding member of the Saudi Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and Transplantation. He was the Associate Editor of the Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology. He has published over 80 publications in different peer-reviewed journals and a speaker in various local and international conferences. During his employment and academic careers, Prof. Aljumah has held multiple administrative positions.

Prof. Hisham Othman Akbar

Consultant Gastroenterologist & Internal Medicine

Prof. Akbar graduated his degree in medicine at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. Completed his residency in internal medicine at University of British Columbia (Vancouver) and fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at McGill Montreal and University of Western Ontario and University of Pittsburg Pennsylvania USA respectively. He is a certified fellows of internal medicine, gastroenterology & hepatology  from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well an American Board on IM & gastroenterology.

He was former chairman of GI division, head of endoscopy unit and gastroenterology fellowship program director at King Abdulaziz University Hospital.

He is currently working as Professor of Medicine and Consultant Internist and Gastroenterologist at King Abdulaziz University Hospital.

Prof. Ibrahim Hammad Al Traif

Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist

Formerly Section head of Department of Hepatology Sciences and Organ Transplant Center King Abdulaziz Medical City, King Fahad National Guard Hospital.

Prof. Al Traif is a faculty member of College of Medicine at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, King Abdul Aziz Medical City. He is also a teacher and examiner of the Saudi GI Fellowship Program. Having more than 2 decades of clinical experience, he was invited to speak in multiple scientific conference locally and internationally. He authored and published several publications in the field of liver disease and transplantation.

He founded the First Liver Transplant Program in the Middle East in year 1994.

Dr. Hamad AlAshgar

Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist

Dr. Hamad AlAshgar is a well-accomplished Consultant in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology working for more than three (3) decades in King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH & RC), Riyadh, KSA. His vast training and experience since his trainee years in different countries specializing in Gastroenterology/Hepatology contributed a lot to his great qualifications and accomplishments he lives through today.

A licensed Physician by Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) in Gastroenterology. He attained double board in Internal Medicine. He had Fellowship Trainings in Gastroenterology and Hepatology & Liver Transplant in KFSH & RC and University of Toronto, Canada, respectively.

He participates in different committees and organizations within and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was a recipient of numerous awards in Research and Publications including oral presentations since 1998.

Presently the Chairman of Department of Medicine, KFSH & RC for 10 years with deep understanding of the Department’s challenges and dynamism and were able to lead in a strategic and an efficient manner. Dr. AlAshgar is also fond of Research projects and have already published more than 70 publications, around 40 Meeting Abstracts & more than 20 accepted researches in KFSH & RC.

His influences, clinical and procedural skills are being imparted to our aspiring physician in this new generation and will continue to provide an excellent patient care and experience for the betterment of our society.

Prof. Faisal Mohammed AlSanai

Consultant Gastroenterologist and Transplant Hepatologist

Dr. Faisal M. Sanai, head of Gastroenterology &Transplant Hepatology at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, KSA. He is currently the Advisor of the MOH’s Committee for the Prevention of Viral Hepatitis since 2008.

Dr. Sanai has the unique distinction of having serve as Board of Director of Saudi Gastroenterology Association (SGA) and Saudi Society for the Study of Liver Disease and Transplantation (SASLT) as well as Liver International and World Journal of Gastroenterology.

He has served as a clinical assistant professor at King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh. He was an active Associate Editor/Editor-in-Chief of the Saudi Journal Gastroenterology before taking the editor-in-chief of the SASLT Newsletter.

He has more than 20 years of clinical experience with more than 130 publications in the field of liver disease and transplantation.

SASLT Excellence Awardee 2022

Dr. Mohammed Yousef Alghamdi

Consultant Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation

Dr. Alghamdi is the Assistant Medical Director and the Director of Internal Medicine Department in King Fahd Military Complex (KFMMC) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He is appointed as the Executive Director for Training Sector 3 (Eastern Province, Dubai & Bahrain).

He completed his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) and finished his advanced hepatology and liver transplantation fellowship at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario (Canada).

His research interests include issues surrounding liver transplantation, including long-term survival, and cholestatic and recurrent hepatitis C. Results of his research have been presented (oral and poster) at numerous medical society meetings.

He is an active Executive Board member of SASLT and was the former President for 2 consecutive terms.

Dr. Alghamdi has authored textbook chapters and authored/coauthored numerous journal articles and is a reviewer for the Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology, Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology and American Board of Gastroenterology under the hepatology examination section.

SASLT Excellence Award 2022

Prof. Mohammed Al Sebayel MBBS, MPH, DIF, FRCS

Professor of Surgery and Consultant Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery

Prof. Al Sebayel is currently working as a Professor of Surgery at  Al Maarefa University, Riyadh (KSA).

He established the Liver Transplant program at the King Fahad National Guard Hospital in Riyadh in 1993 and was known as the 1st program in the middle east. He also established the Hepatobiliary Unit at King Saud University and King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, reactivated and established the Liver Transplant Program at KFSH & RC Riyadh in March 2021 and started the living donor liver transplant program at KFSH & RC Riyadh in November 2022.

Prof. Al Sebayel was the former the Chairman of the Department of Liver & Small Bowel Transplantation & Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery  and was the Director of the Liver Transplant Program at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC). He was also the Head of the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery at King Khalid University Hospital and College of Medicine Riyadh and was Chairman of the Department of Hepatobiliary Sciences at King Fahad National Guard Hospital Riyadh.

He founded the National Donor Promotion Program in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Pan Arab liver Transplant Society in 2006.
